Parish School of Religion (PSR) News

Our PSR children are busy this Lent practicing prayer, fasting and service. Many of our classes have been planning service projects to carry out during Lent, including cleaning areas of the church, collecting for the needy, holding bake sales, and serving as greeters before Mass. Watch them putting their faith into action around our church!

We will not have classes on March 31st due to Easter, and on April 7th, 10th, and 14th due to spring break. Our last classes for the year will be on Wednesday, May 1st and Sunday, May 5th.

Registrations for the 2013-2014 year of Religious Education will begin in April. We will be implementing some new registration policies which will be published in April. Please be sure to register before summer break!

March 13th- First Communion meeting for parents of children receiving First Communion this spring. The meetings will be held at 6:30 in room 4 (English) and room 1 (Spanish). The First Communion retreat will be on Saturday, March 23rd from 9-12.

Family Formation News

We will have our next community meeting on Sunday, March 24th in Reynold's Hall. During this meeting we will be practicing some new and interesting forms of prayer in time for Holy Week!

Our April adult teaching is on the Pope (what perfect timing!) We will meet on Monday, April 1st (this is a schedule change) from 7-8:30.

The April community meeting is on Sunday, April 28th from 10:15-11:30 in Reynold's Hall.

On May 7th we will meet for our last adult teaching for this school year at 7:00 in room 4.

The end of the year celebration will be on Sunday, May 19th in Reynold's Hall from 10:15-11:30. We will learn more about the Trinity as we indulge in some ice cream sundaes!

Family Formation is an alternative to the regular PSR class in which the family learns and grows spiritually together.

Each month one parent attends a teaching covering the subject matter of the lessons for the month and then takes the lessons home to teach the children. On the last Sunday of each month, all of the families participating come together to do an activity or craft relating to the topic of the month. The lessons in this program are excellent and go into more depth than the typical textbook. The community meetings offer a wonderful opportunity for fellowship for the entire family.

Living the Year of Faith

Living the Year of Faith
Some thoughts on the Christian vocation

+Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.
Los Angeles Prayer Breakfast, 9.18.2012

Writing in about the year 116, the pagan historian Tacitus described a fringe group of religious blasphemers who lived in Rome under the emperor Nero. They refused to honor the gods. They engaged in “superstitious abominations” and worshipped a crucified criminal. They were blamed for Rome’s great fire in A.D. 64, and as a result, they were hunted down and put to death.

Three hundred years later, they were the official religion of the Roman state.

Parish School of Relgion (PSR) 2012-2013

At St. John Neumann we offer religious education classes to all children in order to follow the directives of Jesus to "feed my sheep." Our goals as religious educators are to teach the children more about their Catholic faith, to teach them about their Savior, Jesus Christ, and to encourage a personal relationship with their Creator. Our Catechists facilitate this learning through textbooks, prayer, service projects, and fellowship with each other; however, we encourage our parents to be the primary teachers of the faith for their children by attending Mass regularly and discussing the faith at home. The home is the "domestic church," and it is there that the Holy Spirit can most effectively speak to the heart of each family member. Our role in religious education is to support and facilitate this spiritual growth. Let us work together to plant those seeds of faith in our children and watch them grow to the glory of God!

First Reconciliation and First Communion

Second grade children: St. John Neumann offers a sacrament preparation class for second graders in which the classroom focus is specifically on preparing the children to receive  Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Children need to have taken a religious education class in first grade to prepare for the second grade sacrament class. These classes meet on Sunday at 10:15 or Wednesday at 6:30. Additionally, parents are asked to attend two parent meetings during the year in which they will hear a teaching on Reconciliation and the Eucharist, and receive a booklet to work on with their child at home. Children will meet on two Saturdays for special retreats on the sacraments as well. There will be a  rehearsal before the sacrament of First Communion in the spring.

Third-Fifth grade children: For those children who are in third, fourth or fifth grade and would like to receive the sacraments for the first time, St. John Neumann offers a two year sacrament preparatory program on Sunday mornings at 10:15 and Wednesday evenings at 6:30.  Parents will also attend the two parent meetings and receive the booklet to work on at home in the second year of this program. These children will also participate in the two Saturday retreats and the rehearsal in their second year.

If you would like to register your child to prepare for the sacraments, please pick up a yellow sacrament form in the RE office and fill it out along with your child’s class registration form. We will need a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate if he/she was baptized at any church other than St. John Neumann. The class registration fee covers the sacrament program as well.
