In or Behind the Spotlight
Sunday, 18 November 2007

Some men and women live out their lives in the spotlight. Their vocation, their calling, is to be that public person, that person out in front, “on stage.” There are others that live out their lives behind the scene, out of the spotlight, supporting those on stage. In the community of the disciples of Jesus (the Church), there are examples of those in the spotlight and those that work behind the scene, away from the spotlight.

Consider the men and women that make up the Care Team Ministry of SJN. Are they disciples in the spotlight or are they workers behind the scene? I guess it would depend upon whom you would ask.
The Care Team Ministry has this mission: to reach out to those of our community going through a medical crisis. Some members of the Care Team Ministry offer meals to families as they are needed. Other members of the ministry provide transportation to medical appointments, chemotherapy sessions and the like. Some might be called on to provide companion care. Others might be called on to assist with day care. The ministry is a team of caring disciples, hoping to bring the consolation of service to those in need. This is an extraordinary team of “ordinary” disciples, and they are looking for others to join them. Why not give Liz McWhirt a call, and ask how you might help the helpers? Her number is 770-381-8697.

Would you consider members of the Care Team Ministry folks in the spotlight or folks behind the scenes? Ask someone that has been cared for, nurtured, fed, and visited. Ask those that have received this service and they would speak of the bright spotlight of God’s love seen in and through that service. Ask the members of the Care Team Ministry, and they would probably acknowledge the Lord’s Spirit as the Person on center stage, and their work as “supporting cast”, behind the scene. Truth is this: the spirit of humility given to the faithful disciple allows the man or woman to bring the spotlight of God’s love to those in need, while standing back, allowing Love to take center stage. Come and see. Call Liz and ask about how you might bring the spotlight of love to those in need.

We are in need of some specific assistance. Please read the invitation and respond as you are able: (1) I need to develop a team of cooks that will assist on occasion with gatherings at the rectory. Our Advent Penance Service (17 December) would be an example. Priests from our Deanery will be at the rectory, and I hope to offer them a simple supper before the 7 PM Penance Service. Please call me or write me if you might be willing to join this team ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). (2) Our Receptionist Ministry (the volunteers that work in our parish office Monday-Friday) is in need of a few more good men and women. Please call Eleanor Marshall (770-978-0269) and let her know of your desire to assist me and us in the office. We need morning and afternoon helpers! (3) Our team of Sacristans would like to see another member or two. These Sacristans take care of the Sacristies of SJN and assist the priests and deacons mightily! Please call Bill Marten at the parish office to see about how you might assist the Sacristans. We need your help… and…it’s the Lord who invites each of us to get involved with His work, the work of God here at SJN.
