Commitment Weekend
Sunday, 02 March 2008

Brothers and sisters, you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord (Eph.5.8).  The heart of St. Paul was transformed through an encounter with the Risen Lord, and the proclamation from the letter to the Ephesians heard at Mass today shows this Pauline spirituality of conversion, from the darkness of self-centeredness to the light of other-centeredness.  Following the Lord means being secure in His love for us and turning toward our neighbor, as the Lord desires to love them through us. We have been offered the invitation of light, to live in the light and love of the Lord Jesus. The work of our faith-life is to live out this commitment to the light, as disciples of the Lord Jesus, as Ambassadors of God’s Kingdom! As Catholics, we live out this faith-life in a parish.

This is Commitment Weekend, a time when every member of this parish family makes a commitment to the plan of God for us, as we gather our sacrificial pledges together and Build a Legacy of our faithfulness. Many of you have already offered your sacrificial pledge. Please know how grateful the parish family is for your commitment of faith. For all of you that have brought your pledge cards with you today, please place them in the offertory, and know that you are assisting us in the spiritual renewal of SJN. For those that might have forgotten to bring in your pledges today, please bring them in next weekend. And, for any newcomer with us that has not received the Building a Legacy of Faith mailing, please ask one of the deacons or priests…or one of our parishioners, about this wonderful time in the parish’s history.

As I have said during the receptions offered these last five weeks, we are going to build. We will build. What we build depends completely on your sacrificial pledge. We will build everything you have seen in that art work in the vestibule…everything…if each parish family offers a sacrificial three-year pledge. For three years, we will pledge to change our lifestyles, to live more simply, buying less, eating at home more often, so that the savings gleaned from each parishioner & family will add up to the $5.5 million that our project will cost.

We need a three-year pledge of $5,000 or more, from each and every family. This is the sum I am asking of each household. The clergy and staff of SJN have made our pledges. This is the time for you to say “yes” to this longed-for project. We will do this, for the greater glory of God, for our children and for our own joy.

Some of you reading this column may be saying OK Monsignor, I have heard the “pitch”. Now let’s get back to worship. Let’s get back to Jesus. And my response to you is this: what we do as a parish is all about the Lord Jesus. Disciples of Jesus are not called to live as isolated souls, seeking their personal salvation apart from the Church. Disciples of the Lord are members of His Body, and as the Body of Christ, we carry His Light to a world blinded by the darkness of sin, and the human tendency to self-centeredness. To commit to the invitation of the Lord…to holiness…is to commit to the gathered community of the faithful. This is the plan of God; and as Catholics, we follow this plan of God as a parish family. As the parish family of SJN, we are called today, to commit our resources…all for love. This Building a Legacy of Faith is all about the Light, and the hope that has dawned in our hearts.
