A Virtual Tour

Msgr. David TalleyThe Gifts of Art and Architecture: the Catholic Church of St. John Neumann, June 3, 2010 should be ready for distribution at the end of this month. This brochure is offered to you, in hopes that SJN will be able to raise needed additional dollars through Memorial gifts. The brochure will allow you to "take a virtual tour" through the new worship space and see the beauty of the art and architecture that will inspire our liturgical and personal prayer. I am hopeful that each of you will browse through this soon-to-bepublished brochure and decide to "sponsor" an item, in the name of a loved one, by donating the price of the item. It will be a blessing to you and a true blessing for SJN.

There will be a vacancy on the Pastoral Council at the end of June. Karen Madore will complete her term, and she and we hope for another spiritfilled parishioner to take her place. To serve on the SJN Pastoral Council, one needs to be a registered and active parishioner, eighteen years of age or older and committed to the mission and ministry of our parish. Applications to be considered for membership will be available in March (in the office and on-line), and we will take applications until the 10th of May. Please know that this "at large" seat on the Council is for a three year term. I hope and pray that many of you will consider this as another opportunity of service. More information to follow.

The holy season of Lent begins on Wednesday the 17th. Our Ash Wednesday Masses will be at 6:30 am, 8:30 am, 11:45 am, 5:30 pm, 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm in Spanish. We begin this penitential season by receiving a mark of ashes on the forehead. We intensify (or for some of usdiscover) the three great spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting (bodily prayer) and alms-giving  or works of charity. Every disciple of Jesus is called to prayer and works of charity; fasting is a mandated spiritual discipline of those between the ages of 18 and 60 (c.1252 of the CIC83). Abstinence (from eating meat) is asked of those disciples 14 years old and older. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days fasting and abstinence. I hope and pray that each of us sees every Friday as a reminder of Good Friday, and offer some type of penance  especially during this holy season. Please go ahead and mark down the 8th of March on your calendars and Blackberries. Our SJN Lenten Penance Service will be on the 8th, at 7:00 pm. In addition, I hope everyone reading this column will join me at 5:30 pm each Friday of Lent at Killian Hall, for our Knights of Columbus Fish-Fry. Then, after that simple but delicious Lenten meal, drive over to the parish and pray the Stations of the Cross with the folks gathered and one of our deacons. So, look to 8 III at 7:00 pm AND look to the Fridays of Lent, for a 5:30 pm/7:00 pm Lenten meal and prayer.

The two periods of Adoration each Thursday have drawn mixed results from our parish family. The period of Adoration at 8:00 pm, with music and readings in Spanish, has been well attended week by week; but the 7:00 pm hour of Adoration, with readings in English, has not. There are fewer than ten people in attendance each Thursday for this period of Adoration (but these have been faithful!). So the decision has been made to cancel the first hour of Adoration (in English) and move the Adoration (in Spanish) to 7:00 pm. This begins on the18th. But please know this: there is an hour of Adoration on the 4th Wednesday of each month, beginning at 7:00 pm. This is sponsored and supported by the teens of the parish and the core leaders that assist Linda Koerner in her care for our teens. All are welcome at that 4th Wednesday hour of Adoration.

Ministry Spotlight

Charismatic Prayer Group

The purpose of the Charismatic Prayer Group is to meet weekly for prayer and praise, teaching and reflections, sharing and fellowship. We also pray for any person who needs prayer this evening. The Charismatic Renewal is an evangelization movement to help people discover that personal relationship with God, and to experience the gifts and outpouring of the Holy Spirit in their lives. We do this by putting on Life in the Spirit Seminars almost every year, and sponsor Healing Masses occasionally for the parishioners so that they may experience a special touch of love from the Lord. A Call To Leadership

After I returned from my studies in Rome (1997), I had the chance to work at the Catholic Center, in downtown Atlanta. I assisted in the curia of the Archbishop, first as Director of Vocations and then as Chancellor. Later on, I worked in the Tribunal (as did our Fr. Young). As a member of that “inner circle” and as an ex-officio member of the Council of Priests, I was allowed to offer advice and counsel to the Archbishop and to the other members of his “cabinet”.

During those years of service, I had the chance to reflect a bit on the styles of leadership I saw exhibited around me. I began to see a pattern of behavior among some of the “leaders” of the Archbishop’s curia (priests and professional staff alike). When the issue under discussion was sensitive or complicated or uncertain, many around the table would not speak out, would not offer advice and counsel; but when the issue at hand was a “slam dunk”, a certainty that all should hold as true (e.g. all Catholics should pray), then lots of the silent voices would speak out boldly, with passionate, peacock-like fervor. Noticing this dynamic, I began to see the difference between the virtue of prudence and weakness of timidity (the fear of losing favor). A leader must always be prudent in judgment, but never timid in facing what must be faced.
