For Another Father

Msgr. David TalleyThis Sunday marks the civil celebration for all our dads. Please join me in praying for all of our fathers on this Father's Day. May the Lord God bless these men and keep them safe, and beloved in their families. For those of us that have lost our fathers, let us lift them up in prayer, and ask the Lord God to grant them the peace of the Kingdom.

Though we mark off one Sunday a year to honor our dads, every day was Father's Day for Jesus of Nazareth. Yes, for as long as Joseph lived, Jesus loved and respected the beloved husband of Mary. Yes, Jesus learned from Joseph and worked with him, in the toil and laughter of the workshop. Yes, Jesus loved him and glowed in the love Joseph must have showered upon him. But as Jesus left the confines of Nazareth and began his public ministry, he lived for another father, his Abba, his heavenly Father... the One beyond our sight, beyond our understanding. Jesus of Nazareth spoke to the Almighty, the Lord God, with the same intimate term many of us use for our fathers. Jesus used the term Abba... daddy, and those who heard him address the Lord God this way were both startled and attracted to this intimate interaction between a human being and the Majesty of God. We too, are to live each day, remembering the Abba of the Lord, our Father.

We have some news and some needs:

The folks are building us a new church! All goes well with construction. In the coming months, I will need to ask again, hoping to raise a bit more money. Once we begin to celebrate holy Mass in the new worship space, this current church is to become a much-needed parish hall. We'll be looking for additional finances for this second phase of the BLF project. Please God, we raise enough additional dollars to begin work on the new parish hall ASAP.

Liturgical ministries: Liturgical prayer is one of the loves of the parish family of SJN. We are in need of some additional assistance. Please consider sharing some of your time and talents in any (or all) of the following:

  • Altar Guild Ministry takes care of the worship space, cleaning the Altar vessels, the candle covers and all else that needs a dusting before the weekend Masses. This team works mainly on Friday, after the 8:30 AM Mass. Our friend Barbara Basye and her team needs some help with this important work. Please contact her at 770-978-7588.
  • Sacristans are those men and women that make sure all is ready for our liturgies. They keep the two sacristies in order. They set up for the scheduled liturgies, as well as for the weddings and funerals.  Our Head Sacristan, Marion Rabalais and his team of sacristans are looking for a few more men and women (and older teens), to assist in this important liturgical ministry. Please contact Marion at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or at 770-921-1587.

Please join me in thanking Joe Augustine and Paul Klepac for their years of service on the Finance Council. The Council terms of both men are completed, as of this month. Each served in a leadership capacity on the Council (chair and secretary, respectively). Each brought financial and business acumen to the group, along with their love for the parish and our Lord. Thank you!

Women's Catholic Bible Study (WCBS) invites you to come join us as we celebrate our tenth anniversary with a study of the Epistle to the Hebrews and the Epistle of James. You will learn how and why the New Covenant supercedes the Old Covenant in addition to being challenged to not only "talk the talk", but "walk the walk."
