FLOOD UPDATE (Archive 9-28-2009)

9-27-09
Please check the website frequently for updates on scheduled events. As conditions improve, scheduled activities may resume.

ALL CLASSES HELD IN LIND HALL AND THE SCHOOL CANCELLED
FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 28

(Last update: 9-25-09)

Due to the areas that have had flooding needing repair (ie. Lind Hall, SJNRCSchool, gym), all PSR, Family Formation, EDGE, LIFE TEEN,  and Adult Ed classes are cancelled.

  1. The Church will still provide weekend and daily Masses and scheduled Adoration, as well as confessions.
  2. LifeTeen will have Adoration on Wednesday evening in the Church. Pizza will NOT be served, since Lind Hall is closed.
  3. The first Confirmation Class, that was scheduled for this Wed., Sept. 30, will be postponed to the following Wednesday. The classes will extend one extra week from the previous calendar. Check with Linda Koerner if there are any questions.
  4. Monday the Preschool will be accessed for it's structural integrity and decisions will be made about rebuilding at that time. Check out the websites photo albums, as the progress continues.

Please continue to check the website for ways to help! St. John Neumann, pray for us!

PRESCHOOL DEMOLITION (Updated: 9-24-09)
Thanks to the staff and team of 15-20 volunteers who helped empty the preschool into two huge dumpsters. EVERYTHING was ruined! It was heatbreaking! Volunteers pulled rotten sheet rock off of all of the basement walls, and plaster from the basement ceiling. Doors and frames and computers and tables, chairs, rugs... everything had to go to the dumpsters!

Volunteers will be continuing the demolition on Friday (9-25-09). If you have time and energy to spare, please come and help us! BRING GLOVES and WEAR OLD CLOTHES!!! It's a nasty mess!

The Preschool structure will be assessed for its stability on Monday, then work bids will be taken. All of this is very disheartening. Please pray for Monsignor Talley as we rebuild what was lost!

WEEKEND MASSES ARE STILL ON! (Updated: 9-23-09)
TIME & TALENT MINISTRY EXPO postponed to Oct. 10-11!
Things are beginning to dry out:

  1. The Neumann Center, where preschool meets, is pretty much destroyed inside. Most of it will need to be gutted and replaced. Stay tuned for needs there.
  2. The lower parking lot is mostly dry, though covered in mud. Pressure washing anyone???
  3. Tom Smith Rd. has dried up and is passable now from the Five-Forks Rd. entrance. As you drive past the river, check out the mud level on the trees and kudzu... unbelievable.
  4. The field's soggy, but the water has gone down.
  5. Lind Hall is being repaired and cleaned.
  6. The regional school is working very hard to repair the damages caused by flooded classrooms. Classes have been cancelled for the whole week and disaster control efforts have been in full swing. Thanks to all who have worked so hard!

From Msgr. David: (9-22-09)

The Yellow River, which borders our property, has overflowed. The flooding is extensive at the parish and the school.  The lower parking lot, the Neumann Center and the ball fields are covered in water. Tom Smith Rd. is closed from Five-Forks Rd. near Publix. Please spread this news to as many parishioners (and ministries as possible):

  1. ALL meetings are canceled for the week of Sept. 21st-27th. All of PSR, Family Formation, EDGE and Life Teen, along with adult education classes are cancelled.
  2. Our Time and Talents Fair/Expo, scheduled for this weekend (Sept. 26th-27th) is canceled. It has been rescheduled for Oct. 10th-11th.
  3. Our Fall Festival is canceled due to the soggy conditions. The new date for our Fall Festival is Oct. 24, with the Dinner-Dance on Oct. 23rd.
  4. The Pre-school received considerable flooding and is closed until further notice.
  5. Children's Liturgy of the Word will need to meet in the hall of Religious Ed or “another place” on Oct. 11th, due to the Time & Talent Expo being in Lind Hall.
  6. Life teen will cancel Life Night on Oct. 11 to accommodate the Time & Talent Expo for the evening Masses.
  7. The Donut/Fellowship Ministry will provide donuts during the Oct. 11th morning, as usual.
  8. The ball field is under eight feet of water. Dugouts are under water. Softball will be suspended until the water recedes and we assess the damage.

Please continue to check our website throughout the week, to keep up with needs and changes.

Check out additional photos of flooding in our photo gallery.
