In Memory of Archibishop John Francis Donoghue

Archbishop Donoghue In remembrance of Archbishop Donoghue's dedicated service to this local church, Archbishop Gregory asks the following:

  • That parishes, missions and schools in the Archdiocese please fly flags at half mast from now through Thursday, November 17.
  • If your parish/mission/school has bells, you are asked to please ring the bells at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 17 in honor of Archbishop Donoghue.
  • Please include the following in your parish prayers of the faithful this week: "For the repose of the soul of Archbishop John Francis Donoghue, and for the consolation of his family and all of us who mourn his loss."
  • As is customary at the death of a priest, all priests serving in the archdiocese are asked to offer three Masses for the repose of the soul of Archbishop Donoghue.

The funeral arrangements are as follows:

Archbishop Donoghue will be brought to Sacred Heart Basilica for 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, and will remain at the Basilica until 10:00 a.m. on Thursday morning, November 17. The following services will be offered during this time, and are open to all clergy and parishioners:

Wednesday

  • 12:00 noon Daily Parish Mass
  • 3:00 p.m. Day time Prayer
  • 6:00 p.m. Vigil/Vespers
  • 7:00 p.m. Rosary
  • 8:30 p.m. Compline

Thursday

  • 9:00 a.m. Matins & Lauds

At 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, November 17, the remains of Archbishop Donoghue will be brought to the Cathedral of Christ the King for the funeral Mass scheduled for 11:00 a.m. The burial will take place at Arlington Cemetery in Sandy Springs at 2:00 p.m. [Please note, there will not be a procession to the Cemetery; instead, you are invited to gather at Arlington Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.]

For the Services at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The Basilica is located at 353 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, GA 30308. As you may know parking is extremely limited at the Basilica, so we strongly encourage you to please park in the parking lot at 680 W. Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta (the Old Chancery building) and ride the specially provided shuttle buses. The buses will leave every 30 minutes from 9:30 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. On Thursday morning, November 17, shuttle buses will be provided from 8:15 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Clergy and parishioners are invited to participate in all of the ceremonies at the Basilica. For the 6:00 p.m. Vespers on Wednesday evening clergy wishing to sit in choir are asked to please bring choir dress or alb and violet stole. Vesting will be in the sacristy.

For the Funeral Mass at the Cathedral of Christ the King
The Cathedral is located at 2699 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30305. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 17. Priests and Deacons will vest in the downstairs Administration area [please bring alb and white stole]. As the school will be closed for the funeral, clergy can park in the parking lot at the back of the Cathedral. In addition to the parish parking deck, overflow parking will be available at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church [next door to the Cathedral]. We encourage clergy to carpool!
