I watched the horror that befell on Haiti, my native land. The destruction and the suffering were truly unbearable, and for the next two weeks I lived in world of tears, of helplessness, but also of hope. Wednesday, January 13th, at the 6:30 mass, Monsignor David led a heartfelt prayer for the people of Haiti, and he has been praying for them incessantly. Under his leadership, the entire St. John Neumann Community together with other parishes have rallied to alleviate the suffering of the Haitian people. So many of you have expressed so much care and concerns for my family and friends in Haiti. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I want to thank in a special way Monsignor David, Father Armando, Deacon Bill, Deacon Mike, Deacon Greg, Deacon Gary, Mary and Jim Moorman and their children, Mary Olsen, Lori, Mary Lou Schwaner, Carmen Neris, Susan, Mike Feeney, Jack Marder, (please forgive me If I did not mention you by name) all of you who have spent countless hours in the Narthex collecting funds and providing information, and all those who have stood outside in the rain and the cold temperatures the last three weekends to collect food and water for the people of Haiti. St Paul said that when one member of our Body suffers, we all suffer, and that they will know we are Christians by our love. My dear fellow parishioners, your love and generosity towards the least of your brothers and sisters in Haiti truly exemplifies what it is like to be part of the Body of Christ. We have lost many leaders of our church in Haiti, and many church buildings were destroyed, but I know in my heart that the Catholic Church will survive this difficult moment, for Jesus told us that he would never leave us nor forsake us. I ask for your continued prayers for those who are suffering, those who have responded to the call to help and for those who will lead the country towards a better future. Thank you and may God continue to bless all of you. Your sister in Christ, Julienne Jules |
