Blinders

How often have you hidden the truth..... from yourself? This sounds crazy, doesn't it. How can YOU hide the truth from YOURSELF? Sure, I can hide the truth (or anything else) from my friend or from my enemy; but how is it possible for ME to hide the truth from ME?

The nature of our wounded hearts might be likened to a set of blinders that horses are often forced to wear. The "owner" of the horse wants the horse to accomplish a certain task... to pull a wagon... to win a race. The "owner" has no interest in the horse simply being a horse. The "owner", wanting to break the spirit of the horse, wanting to deprive the horse of freedom, uses the set of blinders as a way of limiting the horse's field of vision. The horse thus becomes compliant to the "owner's desire" and follows whatever path the "owner" has set up as the way, as the truth.

How often have I hidden the truth from myself? Maybe the better question is how often I have put on the blinders of self-will (made from the whole palette of sin), and walked not as a son of God and a disciple of the Lord Jesus, but as a hired hand of my own compulsions, my own passions, my own broken spirit? When did the truth of who I am become hidden, buried? How long has this false-self masqueraded itself as "David"?

We are entering the fourth week of the season of Lent, the season of fundamental questions about who we are.  The invitation of the season, to metanoia... to conversion... calls us to turn away from one direction, one goal, one "owner"... and turn toward Another.

Come and join me on Monday night, for our Lenten Penance Service (7 PM), where in prayer we will seek the truth about ourselves, and hope to take off the blinders!

You should put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God's way in righteousness and holiness of truth. (Ephesians 4. 22-24)

Ministry Spotlight

Cursillo/Ultreya

Coordinators:  Denis and Leanne Wright at 678-296-1486 ;; ; wrightones

Cursillo seeks to reveal God’s work in each of our lives and to help us to find new life in doing God’s work. The ministry begins with candidates’ participation in their first Cursillo weekend. These weekends occur twice yearly at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers. The Cursillo weekend emphasizes the fundamentals of Prayer, Study, and Action as means to walk closer with Our Lord. The goal of Cursillo is to promote leadership in the Catholic lay community through countless forms of self-giving and community involvement. Our parish Cursillo community meets monthly to renew the lessons of Cursillo at an event called Ultreya. During Ultreya, members break bread together at a pot luck dinner and follow with spiritual discussions highlighting the lessons available through Prayer, Study, and Action. In addition, many members of the Cursillo community meet weekly in small groups to keep these lessons more accessible in their daily lives.
