Year of St. Paul

In this Year of St. Paul, Pope Benedict XVI is calling upon every member of the Church to discover anew the power and grace of God’s Word, contained in the letters of this extraordinary apostle of the Lord. As I suggested to you in a column at the end of August, one way for us to enter into this Year of St. Paul and continue the work of spiritual renewal would be to read through the letters of our brother. I suggested a pattern of reading his letters in our 31 August bulletin. You can see this suggested reading project on our SJN web-site (www.sjnlilburn.com).

Another way of being a part of this Year of St. Paul might be the making of a pilgrimage. “Making a pilgrimage” is a traditional devotion, used throughout our Church’s history by men and women who were seeking renewal of mind and heart and body. The Archdiocese of Atlanta has two pilgrimage sites: St. Paul’s in Cleveland and SS. Peter and Paul in Decatur. You can find out more information about these pilgrimage sites at the Archdiocesan Year of St. Paul web-site (www.archatl.com/clife/paul ). Msgr. For those of you that cannot travel on a pilgrimage, I have another way of entering into this year of grace. I have found a good “Paul” book: Paul: Least of the Apostles, by Alain Decaux (Pauline Books). For those of you that can afford the cost, this would be a good book to purchase and work through. If we can find a place to meet, I will hope to offer a “book club” series with this text, sometime in 2009.

In addition to our participation in this Year of St. Paul, here are a few other important bits of parish news:

(1) Our next Table of Fellowship Pot-luck Supper is just around the corner. Please mark the 6th of December on your calendar and plan to come and bring your family or a friend, bringing with you a supper dish or two and an “appetite for fellowship”. If you haven’t joined in one of these gatherings in Donnellan Hall, please make sure to join us on the 6th of December... a great way to celebrate the feast day of St. Nicholas! More about this next gathering will follow.

(2) I am still looking for applications for those of you that want to be considered for service on our Pastoral Council. These applications can be found on our parish web-site (link ) or at the parish office. The dead-line for completing these applications and getting them to me is set for 7 January 2009. Please see the last two bulletins (2 & 9 November), for more information on the soon-to-be-established Pastoral Council of SJN.

(3) Did you know that we are building a new worship space? The work is non-stop. Our architect and our construction company are working with the various committees of our Building a Legacy of Faith project. Ground-breaking is just around the corner! All those that pledged a portion of their treasure for this campaign are faithfully redeeming those pledges. Those dollars are rolling in. With what we have been given (so far), we will see the completion of the first phase of our master plan: a new worship space for this community of faith. We will hope to complete the lower floor of that new worship space, along with our parish hall (the current church) and a free-standing chapel... as money is pledged and collected. But good news is here for us... ground-breaking, construction and a new holy place for Mass!
