Notes from Sunset Beach

Beginning next weekend, the 2nd and 3rd of August, a new transitional Mass schedule is in force. This new schedule is transitional because of our decision to build a new, larger worship space. Once we are ready to move into this new worship space (and transform our current church into a fellowship hall), we will be able offer a more sensible Mass schedule, one that will hope to care for the health of our liturgical ministries and our clergy.

As of next weekend, the Mass schedule at SJN is as follows: On Saturday afternoon, we will offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation from 3:30 to 4:30 PM. Our Vigil Mass will follow, at 5:00 PM. On Sunday, we will celebrate Eucharist at 8:00 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:30 PM, 2:00 PM (in Spanish), 5:00 PM (those young at heart and the Life Teen community) and 7:00 PM (in Spanish) With this new transitional schedule, the liturgical ministries will join Fr. Armando and me in celebrating seven Masses each Sunday. Please pray for all those that assist me in bringing the great blessing of Mass to the SJN family.

I will be away from the parish this weekend. As I do each summer, I will be taking a week of vacation at Sunset Beach (in North Carolina). I join a group of friends (some priests and family members), and we find great joy in renting a beach home, and spending the week in the sea and the sun, with fellowship and good food, with a stress free schedule and time for books and movies…and with NO e-mail and telephones! I’ll see you next weekend (2 -3 August), at the commencement of our new transitional Mass schedule! Msgr. Along with our own Fr. Armando, some friends of mine will join the SJN family for Eucharist this weekend: Fr. Steve Yander (chaplain at St. Joseph’s Hospital) will preside at the Vigil Mass on the 26th; on the 27th, Msgr. Luis Zarama (Vicar General of the Archdiocese) will preside at the 10:30 and Noon Masses; and Fr. Bryan Small (chaplain at Emory University) will preside at our 6 PM Mass. Please offer them a warm SJN welcome!

With the various schools beginning in a few weeks, most of our families are beginning into the “school schedule” grind. Please remember that we will offer a new schedule for the catechetical ministry for our children and teens (PSR, EDGE, Family Formation, Life Teen). SJN will gather in the evening each Tuesday and Wednesday, and pass on the gift of the faith-life to our children. In addition, SJN offers the creative Family Formation program, a “whole family” catechesis that assists each mom and dad in their work as primary catechists for their children. Please call the parish office for more details on any of our programs, or visit our parish website at www.sjnlilburn.com.

I am convinced that most everyone reading this column knows of an overwhelming desire of the heart, for spiritual & personal renewal. Prayer & study, fasting & service & alms-giving… these are some of the disciplines of the path to renewal. Another aspect of renewal is in our falling in love with this parish, knowing that it is God’s will that we come together as a Christ-centered family of faith. Please help me in this love affair, by having your picture taken for our new SJN pictorial directory. NOW is the time!
