Our Desire to Rediscover

This Sunday evening (20 July), I will be in Lind Hall and hope to see some of you joining me there, as we hope to discuss the book given to us by the Matthew Kelly Foundation, entitled Rediscovering Catholicism. On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings this week, from 7 to 9 PM, I will host a discussion of this inspirational text.

As most of you should recall, everyone at SJN was offered the book some months ago, as we began the receptions for our Building a Legacy of Faith campaign. As I passed out the donated text to one and all, I commented that the text seemed to speak to our parish directly, about our desire to rediscover the beauty and the joy and the truth of our Catholic heritage. With all of my heart, I believe that the BLF campaign is part of God’s design, as we recognize the call of the Lord to spiritual renewal, to a rebirth in holiness and service… as the parish family of SJN. I have a few copies of the Matthew Kelly book left and will be happy to give them away, to any that might need one.

On Sunday evening, let’s try and discuss Parts One and Two of the book. We’ll try and discuss Part Three on Monday and Part Four on Tuesday. Please make sure that you bring your book to our discussion; and make sure that you’ve read the sections of the book to be discussed. Hope to see some of you in Lind Hall on Sunday, at 7:00 PM.

Our new transitional Mass schedule is set to begin on Saturday, the 2nd of August, with the Vigil Mass at the new time of 5:00 PM., with Confessions beforehand, from 3:30 to 4:30 PM. There will no Vigil in Spanish on Saturday. Instead, the 7:00 PM time slot will now be dedicated to weddings. On Sunday, the 3rd of August, we will celebrate holy Mass at 8, 9:30, 11 and 12:30 PM, then at 2:00 PM in Spanish. In the evening, the Life Teen community will gather together a bit earlier, for a 5:00 PM liturgy. The last liturgy on Sunday at SJN will be a 7:00 PM Mass, in Spanish.

As I have mentioned in the bulletin inserts seen these past few weeks, I recognize that any substantial change in life is a difficult thing to handle. In addition, most Catholics claim their Mass, and identify with the folks that claim that same Mass. So, the decision to change the times of Mass will be difficult for us. But my friends, we had no choice in this. With two priests, we can no longer hold “parallel” liturgies.

And besides, in just a bit, we’ll look at changing the schedule once again, when we move into our new, expanded worship space! Please contact all your SJN friends and remind them of this change.  Let them know that our new, transitional Mass schedule will begin on the first weekend in August! In this and in everything SJN does, let it be for the glory of the Lord and in the love for one another that disciples of Jesus are called to offer.
